A group of Lee’s Summit R-7 School District community members recently participated in a legislative forum with state representatives serving in the Missouri General Assembly. Approximately 60 members of the Lee’s Summit R-7 Citizens’ Advisory Committee, Business Roundtable and Board of Education as well as several PTA presidents attended the March 9 event.
The annual event is hosted by the Citizens’ Advisory Committee and was held at the Missouri Innovation Campus. Kent Kirby, the organization’s chairperson, served as moderator.
All 11 state legislators representing the school district were invited to participate in the forum with the following attending: Sen. Mike Cierpiot, Rep. Donna Pfautsch, Rep. Rebecca Roeber, Rep. Rory Rowland and Rep. Dan Stacy.
The meeting began with the elected officials presenting opening statements. During a question-and-answer session, the legislators discussed concerns about a charter expansion bill as well as a voucher tax credit bill, school safety, proposed tax reductions and the need to compensate for possible reductions to ensure adequate funding for public schools, the opioid drug epidemic, full funding of the Foundation Formula which supports public schools, mental-health care and local control of public schools.
The meeting concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Dennis L. Carpenter, Lee’s Summit R-7 superintendent.
